Not much civility

February 26, 2012 - Harry Eagar
RtO predicted ("True Grit," Jan. 22) that with Ben Cayetano in, the contest for mayor of Honolulu would get more unpleasant. It did.

Cayetano is running against the press, always a sign of mean spirits. But, hey, it always worked on Oahu for Frank Fasi (though not, for some reason, on the Neighbor Islands).

Cayetano made a fool of himself by attacking a Civil Beat reporter for something he didn't write. An easy mistake to make, since the name and picture of the author of the offending piece were right at the top. And then he complained to the reporter's boss -- who had actually written the piece.

As political mistakes go, you can't get much dumber than that.

Anybody who knows Cayetano knows he isn't apologizing, backing down or admitting he goofed.

In the comments at Civil Beat, somebody was impolite enough to remind everyone that Cayetano proclaimed himself the "education governor."
