Maui Invitational participant UCLA under the microscope

March 2, 2012 - Robert Collias
The UCLA men's basketball team opened the season ranked in the top 15 in the nation, Reeves Nelson was on the cover of the West regional edition of Sports Illustrated, and the Bruins had an impressive schedule, highlighted early by the EA Sports Maui Invitational.

The Bruins traveled to Maui unranked after double-digit losses to Loyola Marymount and Middle Tennessee State. They arrived without Nelson, who missed the team plane and came later, led NCAA Division II Chaminade by just two points at halftime, and then got thumped by Kansas and Michigan.

Nelson is now an ex-Bruin, who are currently 17-13 and reeling from a scathing story in Sports Illustrated this week.

Hard to believe back in November that their appearance on Maui would lead to one of the most regrettable seasons ever in Westwood.

Nelson now somewhat refutes the SI story, where he is quoted extensively. ESPN.com, of course, weighed in on the story in several ways.

With a current RPI of 131 the Bruins must win the Pac-12 tournament next week to qualify for the NCAA Tournament.

John Wooden, where have you gone?
