A Facebook friend posted a comment claiming Romney had told college students to "borrow from their parents" to pay for school. After finding a video of his speech, it is not clear to me that t?hat was what Romney meant. It is often not clear what he means. I mean, the trees in Michigan are the "right height"?

However, whatever exactly it was that Romney meant, it did reveal him -- again -- as clueless about economics. He clearly did say that young people should "borrow from their parents" to start a business.

Nothing wrong with that, if your parents have plenty of money, like Mitt's did. But a study last December found that 60% of Americans do not have $1,000. After 30 years of Reaganomics, I'm surprised the figure is that low.

From working in a pawn shop, I can tell you that there are plenty of people who do not have $100, or $30 or even $5.

A few weeks ago, a young couple (father, mother, toddler) came in with a fishing pole to sell. They were offered $30, but they declined and later I saw them walking up and down the street, shopping the pole to other pawn shops and used goods places.

The next afternoon, I saw them back at our place. The husband lingered outside, while the wife carried the pole in. (It is always that way; the husbands are humiliated to be unable to provide for their families.) We bought the pole.

What that told me is that this family was down to its last $30. What happened the next day, I don't know.
