Tom 32nd, Richmond 58th in 100 fly at trials

Participation in the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials is over in less than a minute for the vast majority of competitors, including two Mauians this morning.

Randall Tom finished 32nd in the 100-meter butterfly and Renny Richmond was 58th out of 122 finishers in the same event. Tom's time of 54.24 seconds was 0.72 seconds away from the semifinals, while Richmond finished in 54.66 after a very long season that included two state high school titles and a run at the national high school record in February.

Both were in pretty impressive heats, Richmond entering the event seeded 30th and Tom 40th. Three swimmers from Richmond's heat qualified in the top 16 for this afternoon's semifinals, while one made it from Tom's heat and another is an alternate.

Richmond, 17, has plenty of swimming in front of him and with another year to go at Seabury Hall and then a sure scholarship awaiting at a swimming powerhouse, 2016 or even 2020 will be better chances for him to grab one of only two spots on the U.S. Olympic team. Tom, 25, and a Seabury Hall graduate, says in the above link that he doesn't think this is it for him.
