July 20, 2012 - Carla Tracy
Maui Ocean Center in Maalaea will be jumping this evening from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. with its highly anticipated event of the summer, the Coral Spawning Spectacle.
“Discover the wonders of coral reproduction with complimentary tours and a slideshow presentation on Coral Rehabilitation by Maui Ocean Center's curatorial team. You'll also have the chance to mingle and talk story with the Aquarium's talented divers and aquarists or explore the Aquarium at leisure as you wait for the coral to spawn,” says Director of Public Relations Kelsey Daimon.
”From 7:45 to 9 p.m. join a fascinating naturalist-led tour through The Living Reef. Tours will begin every 15 minutes (last tour starts at 9am) and include topics such as ‘Coral 101,’ ‘Coral Struggles and Survival,’ ‘Coral Biology’ and ‘How to Protect Coral.’
”Guests are also welcome to spend the evening touring the Aquarium. Enjoy this rare opportunity to visit the Aquarium after dark! All exhibits will be open for viewing during the Coral Spawning Spectacle.”
”Complimentary light pupu, coffee and desserts, along with a cash bar, will be offered. Light pupu includes vegetable bruschetta, cucumber wheels, chips and salsa, potato skins, buffalo wings and specialty popcorn.”
A portion of the evening's proceeds will be donated to Project S.E.A.-Link, a local non-profit organization which promotes marine Science, Education and Awareness by providing a Link between students, teachers, scientists, the local community, the general public, other non-profit organizations, and governmental agencies.
Admission is $35 for adults and $30 for children ages 43 to 12. Discounts for kama'aina and aquarium members. Reservations are recommended. Call (808) 270-7088.
