Lunas kick off prep football season with 35-14 win

August 18, 2012 - Robert Collias
Lahainaluna started the 2012 season for MIL football teams with a 35-14 Luna win at Keaau on Friday night.

Saturday night Upcountry, Kamehameha Maui will host defending D-II state runner-up Kapaa, fresh off its first KIF title since 1989, while King Kekaulike will host Kauai High. Both games will begin at 7 p.m.

Also Saturday, Maui High will visit Konawaena.

Baldwin will be the final MIL team to start its season when the Bears travel to Aloha Stadium on Aug. 25 to take on Saint Louis in a battle of teams ranked fifth and sixth in the state poll this week.

A few interesting notes on the Bears is their alumni coaching staff.

Record-setting QB Jordan Helle is back after graduating from Occidental College in Los Angeles to coach his former position, Cody Nakamura is coaching receivers after a standout career at Weber State and Kawika Kahui is coaching defensive linemen as he has for the past few years after his career at San Diego State and a couple years with professional teams.

The big new addition, however, is Kai Maiava coaching the offensive linemen after his career at UCLA did not lead to an NFL chance, at least not yet. Several sources have told me that Maiava has an inexperienced group of Baldwin O-linemen rocking as they learn to protect and create holes for quarterback Keelan Ewaliko — a UH recruit — and whoever wins the jobs at running back.

More on this development and other MIL football news in the next few days as we kickoff our team previews beginning Monday. All five MIL football teams will be featured next week and quite a bit has happened in the offseason, so stay tuned.
