Bears, Sabers renew rivalry, Hoiem out for Baldwin
September 2, 2012 - Robert Collias
UPDATE: Baldwin leads 22-5 midway through the third quarter after a close first half. Maui High scored on a safety after a bad snap on the third play from scrimmage and it was 6-5 Baldwin through the first quarter.
It is about 30 minutes to kickoff for the Maui High-Baldwin football game at War Memorial Stadium and the intrigue is building in several ways.
A couple hours ago, I learned that All-Star linebacker Jordan Hoiem will not play for the Bears because he has the flu. Hoiem has college offers from Hawaii, UNLV, Utah and Utah State.
Already out, of course, is Baldwin's do-everything quarterback Keelan Ewaliko, who suffered a broken rib last week in a 46-0 loss to Saint Louis. He will miss three games.
The Sabers have lost 22 in a row to the Bears, dating back to the last MIL title won by the Sabers, in 2000 in the Curtis Lee era.
Maui High is coming off a dramatic 10-7 win over Kamehameha Maui last week when they scored the winning touchdown with 18 seconds to play.
We will try to stay updated here, so stay tuned.
