Maui's Lotulelei joins Te'o on Butkus list for best LB
October 4, 2012 - Robert Collias
His road to this point has been trying, but John Lotulelei of UNLV and formerly of Baldwin is on the 51-player Butkus Award finalist list for the best linebackers in the country.
The Lotulelei name is a familiar one to MIL sports fans — Tau Lotulelei was a standout linebacker, wrestler and track weight man for Maui High until graduating from Maui High last season and he has made his way to UNLV as well, redshirting his freshman season and soaking up all the knowledge from John that he can. The two brothers also speak to their oldest sibling, Saia Lotulelei, daily. If Saia's name rings a bell, it should — he was a three-time state heavyweight wrestling champion for Maui High in the early 2000s. Now 28, Saia Lotulelei is back wrestling for York University, an NAIA school in Nebraska.
John Lotulelei is on the same finalist as Notre Dame's Manti Te'o, the former Punahou star who has been through some very troubling times in the past couple weeks.
