Cyr 4-under par, tied for 9th at Q School first stage

October 25, 2012 - Robert Collias
At the midway point in his first stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School, Sam Cyr is tied for ninth at 4-under par. He shot a 71 today.

Cyr, a 2005 King Kekaulike graduate, two-time NAIA champion for Point Loma Nazarene University, 2010 Mid-Pacific Open champion, 2010 Hawaii State Open champ, and 2011 Maui Open champ, fired a 71 today and is in fairly good shape at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif., but he is only one shot in front of the 18-and-ties-advance cut line, so a solid final 36 holes are a must.

This is his fourth try at Q School and he made it to the second stage in 2009 and 2010 before bowing out at this stage last year.

Cyr started round two on the back nine and had birdies on 10, 11, and 12, but bogeyed 17 and 4.

Cyr, currently 68th on the Asian Tour money list with $39,473.21 earned in 13 events, recently cracked the Official World Golf Rankings. He is 995th on the list after being 991st last week — the list goes through 1,000, btw — and to my knowledge, he's the first Mauian ever to make that very cool list.
