Baldwin's Arriaga, Maui High's Karaviotis drafted
June 8, 2013 - Robert Collias
As we predicted right here, Baldwin's Akoni Arriaga and Maui High's Mark Karaviotis were selected in the MMajor League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, both going in the late rounds today.
From speaking previously with Karaviotis and his family, being drafted in the 39th round — by the Arizona Diamondbacks — makes it a near certainty that Karaviotis goes to Oregon where he has a baseball scholarship waiting.
I'm told Arriaga is on the fence between going to the Toronto Blue Jays, who took him in the 35th round, or going to Yavapai Junior College in Arizona in the fall.
Professional commitments must be made by July 12 — or off to school it is for high school players.
Arriaga and Karaviotis are on a pretty good list of Hawaii players selected in the last couple days.
The MIL finished just behind the ILH in draftees, 3-2, and ahead of every other league in the state.
