Restating the Obvious

POSTED:Wed, August 27, 2008 @ 6:42PM

Hosed

A good many years ago, a psychologist new to the island called to ask if I would announce her new business: teaching the meaning of aloha.

The threshold for new business announcements on the Money Matters page is low, but it isn't painted on the floor. I tried to suggest to her that anyone who would charge money for a course on the meaning of aloha perhaps didn't know what aloha means. Not that I'm an authority, but that's my mana`o.

(In case you're interested, new businesses claiming to heal or make cheap energy are subjected to an especially beady eye here.)

I was reminded of that incident by today's story by Lee Imada about a Canadian who's dissing Frank DeLima for insufficient cultural sensitivity.

At least she's not charging for her opinion, but my mana'o is she should be learning, not teaching.
