Lead gone, but Lahainaluna boys still have team-title shot

March 1, 2014 - Robert Collias
Preliminary matches are going on right now on OC Sports (channel 12) and the Lahainaluna boys wrestling team's lead to begin the day in the state tournament has dissolved into a 3.5-point deficit to Pearl City.

With three finalistsZach Wigzell at 113, Christian Balagso at 120 and defending state champion Bubba Jaramillo at 145 — the Lunas have one fewer than the Chargers. PC has four in third- or fifth-place matches, the Lunas five.

No Neighbor Island team has ever won a state team title and it will not happen for the Luna girls, who entered today with a five-point lead, but now trail buy 13.

The Luna girls have Breanna Dudoit Vasquez in the 135-pound final, defending champion Carly Jaramillo in the 140 final and defending champion Lalelei Mataafa in the 220 final.

Stay tuned.
