Lady Lunas cap season with 4 of 5 MIL first-team slots
March 15, 2014 - Robert Collias
They finished one win short of their stated goal — a state championship — but the Lahainaluna girls basketball team landed four girls on The Maui News' five-player MIL All-Star first team.
Lahainaluna won its 10th straight MIL title this season in easy fashion — all 14 of their league games games had a running clock for the entire second halves with a 30-point-plus margin. Lahainaluna had two second teamers and two more honorable mention selections to account for half of the 16 players noted on coaches' ballots.
Molokai had a special season as well, advancing to the D-II state semifinals before finishing fourth.
Point guards Lindsay Bates of Lahainaluna and Hepuakea Falealii of Molokai are the MIL Players of the Year and both return next season.
The Lunas drew the attention of Falealii when the Farmers watched a game or two when they were on Maui this season. The 5-foot-4 Bates and 5-2 Falealii played on an all-star team together last summer.
“They are, like, another motivation,” Falealii said of the Lunas. “They work so hard and are just non-stop running. Lindsay is just full of energy and she never stops running, she is so quick.”
