Hana events in the spotlight
April 10, 2014 - Carla Tracy
Hana Cultural Center’s 16th annual Ho‘olaule‘a will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Hana Fairgrounds, the open field below Hana Ranch Store. This year’s theme is A Taste of Hana. The event is dedicated to Coila Eade.
“We’ll set up a large tent on the field and seven top Hana chefs will each have a station,” says Judy Kinser, publicist. Braddah “Hat” Tihiva will barbecue pork, Pranee’s Thai restaurant will make curry; Arthur and Shorty Helekahi will make their world-famous Ata’s burgers; Brian, Ben and Barry Villliarimo will add a family flair; Gary Chow will be cooking some, well, chow; and Hana Fresh will also be represented.
And, mark your calendars for Saturday, May 3, when the 22nd annual East Maui Taro Festival returns to Hana town. There will be 20 food booths, 40 arts and craft booths, live music and more. The Taro Pancake Breakfast will be flippin’ hotcakes Sunday, May 4; and the “I Am Haloa” taro benefit dinner will precede it all on Friday, May 2 at the scenic Kahanu Garden.
I also just heard about a Pua‘a (pork) dinner with wine pairings that will flow at Hana Ranch Restaurant on Friday, May 9. Cost is $50 with pairings.
