Victorino has season-ending surgery
August 5, 2014 - Robert Collias
Here is a breaking news story filed by sports editor Brad Sherman this morning:
Boston Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino will undergo surgery on his lower back today, which likely means the end of his season, the team has reported on its website.
The 33-year-old Victorino, a St. Anthony High School graduate, was placed on the disabled list for the third time this season on Friday.
On his Twitter page, Victorino posted the message, "Let's do this. Ready for surgery to take care of the back. See you soon #RedSoxNation!" with three photos of him in a hospital gown - in two of the images, he was flashing a shaka.
The team said that after getting two medical opinions, Victorino will be operated on by Dr. Robert Watkins in California.
Victorino's previous two sints on the DL this year were because of hamstring injuries.
The two-time All-Star has played in just 30 games this season, batting .268 with two home runs, 12 RBIs, 14 runs and two stolen bases.
Boston.com reported here that the back surgery is season-ending for Victorino.
Victorino shared these hospital photos from his Twitter account.
