The Bald-Headed Truth
POSTED:Thu, October 2, 2008 @ 7:12PM
Victorino’s grand slam and blogShane Victorino, a 1999 St. Anthony High School graduate chronicled in our sports pages every day of the baseball season, has been enjoying the biggest days of his pro baseball life recently as 2008 was a career year for the Phildelphia Phillies outfielder. It is a safe bet that just moments ago, the 1999 Maui News MIL Boy Athlete of the Year had the biggest at-bat of his life — hitting a second-inning grand slam off of Milwaukee’s CC Sabathia to give the Phillies a 5-1 lead going to the third inning of Game 2 of their NL Division Series in Philadelphia. Shane also has a blog where he talks about the experience of being in the playoffs for the second year in a row. UPDATE: The Phils held on for a 5-2 win to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-5 NLDS. Victorino was named the Player of the Game by ESPN radio (the award is sponsored by an auto parts company, I think; I didn't catch the exact name). Shane was 3-for-4 with two doubles, the homer, 4 RBIs and a run, and two stolen bases, giving him three for the series. You can see the box score here. You can see video of the blast here. And, yes, I have already placed a call to his cell phone for anything more we can get, although I promise he will be a large part of our coverage in Friday’s Maui News. I guarantee it will be worth picking up.
