The Bald-Headed Truth

POSTED:Sat, March 22, 2008 @ 5:40PM

Kai Maiava now a fullback

Kealakai Maiava (Baldwin 2007) is still listed as wearing the No. 51 he did last fall when he was a freshman All-American offensive lineman for the University of Colorado, but he is now listed as a fullback.

Maiava was the starter at left guard for the Independence Bowl in December — one of eight games he started as a freshman — and also showed his OL value and versatility by being listed as the backup at center and third-string RG.

A 6-0, 280 pounds, Maiava may be a bit short to be a classic offensive lineman, but he played well enough to be named a freshman All-American by The Sporting News, the only publication that does a freshman A-A team.

There are two other fullbacks listed on the Buffs’ roster, senior Maurice Cantrell (6-0, 240) with two varsity letters, and junior Jake Behrens (6-0, 230) with one varsity letter.

I’m not sure how much action the fullback sees in Dan Hawkins’ version of the spread attack, but this is a surprising move to me.

Colorado just finished its first week of spring drills and they will conclude next month. The Buffs are taking the next week off to enjoy spring break.
