Students nominated for HIKI NO awards

The public is invited to view outstanding student-produced video stories on the big screen at PBS Hawaii’s first-ever HIKI NO Festival.
The featured stories, produced last school year, have aired on PBS Hawaii’s student news program, HIKI NO, and are nominated in this year’s HIKI NO Awards.
The HIKI NO Festival screening is free of charge and will be at Kaahumanu 6 theaters at Queen Ka‘ahumanu Center beginning at 6 p.m. Aug. 25. A venue and date on Lanai will be announced later.
The winners of the HIKI NO Awards will be announced via live stream Sept. 17 at pbshawaii.org. A panel of veteran local news professionals will determine the winners.
2014 HIKI NO Awards nominees from Maui County are:
* BEST NEWS WRITING—HIGH SCHOOL, “Four Sisters Bakery” — H.P. Baldwin High School.
* BEST PERSONAL PROFILE—HIGH SCHOOL, “Kimberly Yap” — Lahainaluna High School.
* BEST OVERALL NEWS STORY—HIGH SCHOOL, “Same Sex Weddings” — Maui High School.
* BEST PERSONAL PROFILE—MIDDLE SCHOOL, “Substitute Teacher” — Kamehameha Schools Maui Middle; “Crossing Guard” — Lahaina Intermediate; “21st Century Cowgirl” — Seabury Hall Middle.
* BEST OVERALL NEWS STORY—MIDDLE SCHOOL, “Sea Turtles in Peril” — Seabury Hall Middle.
* BEST HOME-BASE SCHOOL—HIGH SCHOOL, H.P. Baldwin High School; Lanai High and Elementary School.
* BEST HOME-BASE SCHOOL—MIDDLE SCHOOL, Seabury Hall Middle School
