Lahainaluna High School coaches and players celebrate on the sideline after a touchdown during the second quarter of a 28-14 victory over Baldwin in a Maui Interscholastic League game Friday night at War Memorial Stadium.
WAILUKU --- The seniors on the Lahainaluna High School football team were in the 7th grade the last time the Lunas beat Baldwin. But the West Maui crew rose up with a first-half offensive surge and a stifling defense all night --- capped by a goal-line stand in the final two minutes --- to down the Bears 28-14 on Friday night. The Lunas snapped a seven-game losing streak, dating to 2004, to their Maui Interscholastic League rivals and claimed a share of the unofficial overall league title in front of about 5,000 fans at War Memorial Stadium, most of them there to celebrate the Lunas’ homecoming. Both teams finished league play 6-2 and split their two meetings, with the Bears winning 27-19 on Sept. 18. Each team will play in the First Hawaiian Bank State Championships quarterfinals on Nov. 20, Baldwin at War Memorial in the Division I event against Leilehua and Lahainaluna at Aiea in Division II.
