With Pony Express Tours horse wrangler Byron Gardner in the lead, “Darrell’s Gang” winds its way down Sliding Sands Trail last Saturday.
When Schaefer International Gallery Director Darrell Orwig called and said he was rounding up a gang to ride horses down into Haleakala National Park’s crater, I didn’t hesitate to join up. Besides being a great artist and all-around good guy, Darrell knows how to have fun.
Sizing up the group gathered at the Pony Express Tours office in Upper Kula last Saturday, I could see we were long on artistic talent, if perhaps a little short on riding experience. Darrell’s gang included Maui Arts & Cultural Center President and CEO Karen Fisher, Exhibits Programs Manager Neida Bangerter, Marketing Director Barbara Trecker, local artist Robert Zaleski, middle school student Tatiana Eckhart and German transplant Hella McCormick.
