Pigments of her imagination
?Maui artist Rachel DeBoer competed as a model and artist during the World Bodypainting Festival in Austria this past July. Here she brings another artist’s imagination to life using her body as a canvas.
Imagine standing on stage in front of a sea of strangers wearing next to nothing, just a delicate strip of fabric shielding your private areas from thousands of curious eyes studying your every move. Sound like a bad dream? For Maui artist Rachel DeBoer, 33, it was one of the best moments of her life. “It was unbelievable — absolutely amazing,” she says of the experience. The exhibition was part of the World Bodypainting Festival in Seeboden, Austria, held this past July. The annual celebration draws the best in the business for a week of workshops, demonstrations and intense competition. Widely regarded the art form’s premier event, 200 artists representing 38 countries and nearly 22,000 visitors flocked to this quaint town to celebrate the body painting culture and community. Covered in a thin layer of paint, DeBoer’s bare body was transformed into a living, breathing and moving canvas.
