Young Historians examine Racism in America
KATHERINE CHUN
Junior essay champion
In a year when an African-American candidate could be elected president, it is ironic that racial discrimination in America was the common thread between the three Maui History Day projects that qualified for the national contest on the Mainland this summer.
Katherine Chun, a 7th-grader at Iao Intermediate School, took first place in the junior (grades 6 to 8) essay division with her essay on “Daisy Bates: Conflict and Compromise in Desegregating Central High” in Arkansas.
Christine Almogela, Jhenelyn Galo and Randolf Uclaray, juniors at Maui High School, placed second in the senior (grades 9 to 12) group display division with their project on “Nuna Daul Isunyi: The Trails Where We Cried” about the forced relocation of the Cherokee tribe.
Hannelore Rolfing, a 7th-grader at Sacred Hearts School, captured fourth in the junior performance division with her dramatic portrayal of “Eleanor Roosevelt, Crusader for Human Rights.”
