Writer-director David Mamet once again snares his audience in a game of deception in this action drama set against the mixed martial arts world of Los Angeles. Chiwetel Ejiofor plays a latter-day samurai, back from Gulf War action, who now runs a jujitsu studio but refuses to compete himself. It turns out most of the other members of the stellar cast —Emily Mortimer, Max Martini, Tim Allen, Rebecca Pidgeon and Rodrigo Santoro — have their reasons for wanting him to break his code of ethics, and they’ve all got their own ways of making him do it.
“Speed Racer” PG, 2:30, Kaahumanu 6, Kukui Mall 4 and Lahaina Wharf Cinemas.
After his stunning star turn in “Into the Wild,” Emile Hirsch goes for the popcorn in this attempt by “Matrix”-making brothers, Larry and Andy Wachowski, to make a more family-oriented action adventure. Adapted
