A plea from Mrs. Bush

We've heard this nonsense before. Nobody ever talks about the incredible gains that women had under Saddam Hussein and Gaddafi, why is that? Women in these countries enjoyed unprecedented freedoms that were unique to the Muslim world, but you don't ever hear about that from the western media, how come?

Let me offer a more plausible explanation, which is that the United States has both an economic and strategic interest in staying in Afghanistan. Economic because Afghanistan has over a trillion dollars worth of minerals like lithium. Strategic because it borders China, and the United States is developing a new (but old) strategy of containment for China (this is why we were in Vietnam, as the Pentagon Papers clearly demonstrate).

The United States government could care less about women's rights or democracy for that matter. Proof? Look at our "great ally" Saudi Arabia. No women's rights, no democracy, but they do have lots of oil.
