New firefighters primed for action

KAHULUI -- Although they won’t report to fire stations until this week, the Maui Fire Department’s 13 newest firefighters already have some experience battling brush fires.

Jeremey Irvine (right) was chosen by his fellow 24th Recruit Class members to speak during the graduation ceremony Friday. The other new firefighters are (from left) Ikaika Blackburn, Nathan Horner, Kenyon Smith, Larry Moore, Clement Enomoto, Noa Kalanihuia, Conrad Guerrero, Kellen Yap, John Devlin, Lono Poepoe, Matthew Akiona and Kodi Shepley. “I like to call us the lucky 13,” said Moore. “It’s been one of the most challenging experiences of my life.”
