Let’s Talk

April 15, 2007
By Liz Janes-Brown, staff writer

P lanetary upset: I don’t know whether it has anything to do with the universe really, but it seems life is out of whack these days. For one thing, people seem to be dying, from the world- renowned Kurt Vonnegut to Maui folks we love. Barry Shannon left us last week, the founder and visionary of Mana’o Radio, who encouraged his volunteer DJs to broadcast live in their own eclectic style just like the old days. Then there was the unexpected death of Gary Moore of Hawaii Hearth & Leisure last week, a fixture in town with his boxer, Chase. He was the spark plug in Makawao, notably the annual Fourth of July parade, but lots more. Back when I was in radio giving reports from that annual event, Gary would invite me to park next to the store with a perfect view of the festivities. (We still have a bunch of his killer hot sauces in the cupboard.) These folks and others less known who passed recently are remembered fondly.
