Jarred Rome reacts after his throw of 224 feet, 3 inches Monday gave him the men’s title at the Maui Big Wind Challenge discus competition at War Memorial Complex.
The winning distance was also a personal best for Rome, who competed in the 2004 Athens Olympics.Another 2004 Olympian, Ian Waltz, finished second with a throw of 223-0. Waltz had led after Saturday’s first round at 220-9.
Casey Malone, also member of the 2004 U.S. Olympic team, finished third with a throw of 207-6.
Karl Erickson, who had a throw of 199-11 Saturday, reached 190-8 on Monday.
Becky Breisch, a former U.S. champion, had Monday’s best women’s throw, a personal-best 221-0. That is the second-best distance in the world this year, behind the 222-0 put up by two-time Olympian Suzy Powell on Saturday, which set the American women’s record.
Powell’s top throw Monday was 217-3.
Beth Mallory-Lesch had a throw of 209-7 Monday to finish third.
Stephanie Brown-Trafton, a 2004 U.S. Olympian had a throw of 201-5 Saturday – her best on Monday was 189-3.
Cecilia Barnes had a throw of 189-0 on Monday.
