THREE MAUI ATHLETES WIN KAIMANA AWARDS

HONOLULU – Three Maui Interscholastic League athletes – Carrie Yap of Baldwin High School, Lipoa Kahaleuahi of Hana and Ian Dela Cruz of King Kekaulike – are among 21 winners of Kaimana Award Scholarships, which will be presented Saturday by the Hawaii Medical Service Association.

The award recognizes “outstanding achievement in athletics, academics, sportsmanship and community service.’’

Yap won an MIL judo title at 129 pounds this season, Kahaleuahi competed for the Dragons’ girls basketball and cross country teams and Dela Cruz was a second-team MIL All-Star in tennis.

The presentation will be made at the Hawaii Convention Center, and the featured speaker will be University of Hawaii men’s basketball coach Bob Nash.

KIFFMANN TAKES SECOND AT KARLOVAC OPEN

INNSBRUCK, Austria – Maui resident Miles Kiffmann of Kiffmann Taekwondo recently traveled to Europe to compete at the Karlovac Open in Karlovac, Croatia, and the Austrian Open in Innsbruck, Austria.

The 14-year-old Kiffmann, a third degree black belt, took home the silver at the Karlovac Open, held on May 25.

Kiffmann was eliminated from the Austrian Open on June 2 after losing to Poland in a 3-4 upset.

Next month, Kiffmann travels with 30 other Kiffmann athletes to the 2007 USA Taekwondo National Championships in San Jose, Calif. Black belt winners of this event will compete at team trials at the Olympic Training Center in August for a spot on the U.S. National Team.

KIHEI RESIDENT WINS DECATHLON AT NATIONALS

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mary C. Trotto of Kihei won the women’s 60 division decathlon recently at the USA Track and Field national champinships.

Trotto had a time of 19.1 seconds in the 100 meters, 1:43.39 in the 400, 7:28.5 in the 1,500 and 29.74 in the 80 hurdles. She had a throw of 15.49 meters in the discus, 1.37 in the pole vault, 18.25 in the javelin and 6.76 in the shot put. She cleared 0.96 meters in the high jump, and had a long jump of 2.29 meters.

Trotto will compete in the world masters championships in Italy.
