KAANAPALI – Forty years ago, probably 90 percent of tourists coming to Maui were first-timers. Twenty years ago, the ratio was just about 50-50, and the Maui Visitors Bureau was beginning to be concerned that it wasn’t seeing enough new business.

The visitor count for 2007 is leveling off, but there’s still plenty of business, with arriving and departing planes stacking up at busy Kahului Airport on Thursday afternoon.
