HOOKIPA – With Makana, the monk seal who treats Hookipa as her vacation retreat, back on the north shore beach again, marine mammal officials are reminding the public that monk seals are protected under the Endangered Species Act.

A Hawaiian monk seal was a regular at the Lahaina Harbor last March. Federal and state marine resources specialists urge people to refrain from feeding seals, which can become nuisances in harbors and on beaches if they lose their "wild" behavior patterns.
