WAILUKU – The owners of the Peahi cliffs where spectators gather each winter to watch the world’s top surfers ride the world’s biggest waves are looking for ways to manage the crowds.

Cars line an agricultural road as a crowd gathers to watch surfers at the world-famous “Jaws” break in Peahi, which was pumping on Wednesday. Managing crowds when the waves get big is a problem for landowner A&B Properties Inc. and Maui Land & Pineapple Co., which leases the land to grow pineapple. Protecting the crop is a problem, with parked cars crushing the fruit in some instances, while pineapple theft has also been reported. A harvest planned for Wednesday was canceled due to the crowd.
