POSTED: March 3, 2008

Single-car crash kills Wailuku man

KIHEI — A 34-year-old Wailuku man died in a single car crash late Saturday after his vehicle struck a utility pole on North Kihei Road.

The identity of the driver will be verified by a fingerprint analysis, according to a police news release.

There was one front-seat passenger in the man’s car — a 41-year-old man — who was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition Sunday.

According to police, the Wailuku man was driving his 2002 Honda Accord four-door sedan around 11:36 p.m. Saturday when it hit the pole. The driver was headed toward Wailuku when he lost control of his car, went off the right shoulder of the roadway and struck the pole.

Authorities closed the roadway about 11:50 p.m. to investigate the scene and reopened it at 3:23 a.m. Sunday.

The incident was Maui County’s fourth fatal motor vehicle crash as compared to two the same time last year.

Lahaina Villager route proposed

LAHAINA — An informational booth about the proposed Lahaina Villager bus route will be set up from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at the entrance of Safeway at the Lahaina Cannery Mall.

The proposed route is intended to connect the neighborhoods of Lahaina to workplaces, shopping and entertainment in Lahaina, according to a news release from Lahaina Bypass Now, a grassroots group whose volunteers will be manning the informational booth.

Lahaina Bypass Now Executive Director Theo Morrison said that the Lahaina Villager bus route could provide traffic relief and “much needed affordable mobility for Lahaina residents.”
