• PERSONAL: Age 17; daughter of Sherman and Carol DePonte of Kula; enjoys scrapbooking, beading and sewing; shopping; traveling; spending time with family, friends and her boyfriend; dancing; going to the beach; sleeping; and eating.

• AT SCHOOL: Clubs including Key, Leo (historian), Drama (vice president/historian), Art (treasurer), Hiking and Spanish; Pep Band; International Thespian Honor Society; Graduation Committee; Student Senate; drama productions (“Shogun Macbeth,” “Honk Jr.” and “Click!”); honor roll; cheerleading.

• OFF CAMPUS: Adopt-A-Highway litter control, with her family, of a stretch of Haleakala Highway near their home; Relay For Life; attends Waipuna Chapel.

• BEYOND HIGH SCHOOL: Plans to major in chemistry and/or biology at the University of Montana; possibly attend medical school to become a medical examiner. Also would like to travel in Europe, especially Italy, Portugal and Spain.

• WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE BIGGEST PROBLEM FACING YOUTH TODAY? “I believe that one of the biggest problems facing youth today is sex. The concept of sex before marriage is popular among youths, and the entertainment industry is a prime promoter of this act. Sex has become a hobby, causing youths across the nation to give in to peer pressures facilitated by our society. If only adults were better role models for children of today, there might not be as many pregnant teens as there currently are.”

The students in this weekly feature are selected by officials at their respective high schools. “Student Spotlight” recognizes students of good character who are involved in school or community activities such as athletics, clubs, student government and volunteer work.
