Baldwin boys post state qualifying marks

Tesoro, Massenburg each win two events at MIL meet No. 2

WAILUKU — A chilly Friday night at War Memorial Stadium didn’t hinder athletes taking part in the second Maui Interscholastic League track and field meet of the season.

In fact, for many it seemed to help — the Baldwin boys field athletes in particular racked up state-qualifying marks.

The Bears’ Sean Tesoro won two events, throwing 51 feet, 8 1/4 inches in the shot put and 159-3 in the discus. Baldwin’s Leti Lang took second in the discus with a 146-11 and teammate Dylan Puaa took third at 139-4.

‘‘Actually Sean qualified and Leti Lang threw better than last week and then this other kid, Dylan Puaa, he threw a 139 so he also qualified, which is a pleasant surprise,’’ said Baldwin boys coach Gary Sanchez. ‘‘So we’re kind of happy … it’s a pleasant surprise, we’re starting to piece things together.’’

Kawika Graco cleared 20-5 3/4 in the long jump for the Bears, just edging Bryson Williams of Lahainaluna by two inches.

King Kekaulike’s Bailey Massenburg posted top finishes in the girls 800 and 1,500.

‘‘Last year, I was coming off of mono at the beginning of the season, so I couldn’t really see how well I was doing with my training, so it’s great just to start the season healthy,’’ said Massenburg, who ran a 5:14.79 in the 1,500 and a 2:31 in the 800.

‘‘I’m taking it slow — I just want to work on my training and just time it right so I do my best work later in the season.’’

Seabury Hall’s Kailea Tracy-Visintainer beat her own 400 time from the first meet of the season, running a 57.70. Teammate Lea Lundblad came in second at 1:02.31.

The Spartans’ Kaipo Rocha won the girls shot put again after qualifying for the state meet last week with a throw of 34 1/2.

Kamehameha Maui’s Chawn Villalon also qualified for the state meet in the boys high jump at 5-10.
