Health-occupation students earn spots in state contest

PUKALANI — Maui high school students qualified for the state Health Occupations Students of America contest during the third annual HOSA Student Leadership Conference, which was held on the Kamehameha Schools Maui campus.

They emerged from a field of 82 students who competed Feb. 23 in events related to health occupations.

The State HOSA Conference will be held March 31 through April 2 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki. The top three finishers in the categories there will represent Hawaii at the national conference to be held in Dallas June 18-21.

The HOSA competition will be part of the Hawaii Career and Technical Student Organization, or CTSO, conference. Also participating will be students from the Future Farmers of America, Distributive Education Clubs of America and the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America organization.

At the Maui conference, ribbons were awarded for the top three places in each category. These students qualified for the state conference, as did those whose event scores met Maui conference guidelines for advancement.

Following, in order of finish, are the ribbon-winners in each category:

• Dental spelling: Anie Utrera and Jonecy Renon, both of Maui High.

• Medical spelling: Marie Ganoot, Lahainaluna; Kaulana Kalawaia, Maui High; Nicole Ewing, Lahainaluna.

• Medical math: Josie Gomez, Lahainaluna; Quincy White, Maui High; Celine Munoz, Lahainaluna.

• Medical terminology: Sean Hernandez, Lahainaluna; Alden Kaleohanohano-Fernandez, Kamehameha; Megan Medeiros, Lahainaluna.

• Pathophysiology: Ailea Apana, Kamehameha.

• Sports Medicine: Cathy Agapay, Maui High; Larissa Nakamitsu, Kamehameha.

• CPR/first aid: Allyson Fukayama-Jade Beerman, Cherie Joaquin-Keely Hasset, both pairs from Kamehameha.

• Extemporaneous writing: Grant Cabebe, Maui High.

• Prepared speaking: Kevin Quitoriano, Lahainaluna; Dominique Laborte, Lahainaluna; Ashley Tabisula, Maui High.

• Job-seeking skills: Noelle Bali, Lahainaluna; Angela Romero, Maui High.

• Medical photography: Rowena Buted, Katherine Jimenez, Michelle Littleton, all of Maui High.

• Medical reading: Maui High team of Vanessa Baldos, Princess Tavares and Comalyn Castillo.

• Extemporaneous health poster: Maricris Bote-Estabillo, Lahainaluna; Mark Bulosan, Maui High; Raquel Donia, Maui High.

• Career health display: Shelby Yanos-Jennifer Catiggay, Jessie Maurice-Candice Edinger, Jamelva Baguyo-Crisian Baguyo, all of Maui High.
