KAHULUI — The Hawaiian burials at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua will be discussed by Charles Kauluwehi Maxwell Sr. Monday when he is the guest speaker of the Rotary Club of Kahului.
The club meets weekly from 11:50 a.m. to 1 p.m. at The Dunes at Maui Lani restaurant. The public is invited; the fee is $20 for a buffet lunch.
The cultural specialist long has been involved in Hawaiian affairs, such the repatriation of Kahoolawe and civil rights. He led classes for Ritz employees about the proper way to treat the burials uncovered during their hotel’s construction.
He is an ordained minister, healer, song and chant writer, and consultant to the Maui Ocean Center on how to care for sharks held in captivity
Maxwell also teaches Hawaiian spirituality and culture at the Maui Community Correctional Center and has a Friday morning radio talk, “Talk Story With Uncle Charlie,” on KNUI AM 900.
