Hearing on proposed federal grants for community slated

WAILUKU — A hearing on a proposed Community Development Block Grants action plan will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in the Planning Department conference room.

The county is expecting to receive $2 million in grants from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Proposed projects include: Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Center rehabilitation ($320,000), Hana Nutrition Center construction ($300,000), an emergency generator for the Keanae water system ($100,000), Lanai Community Health Center predevelopment ($500,000), Hana fire tanker ($435,500). An additional $382,742 would cover administrative costs. Other projects could be included if additional funding is available.

Also to be discussed Friday are $989,346 in proposed HOME Program grants, including: Hale Mahaolu Ehiku — Phase 1B ($750,000), Honokowai Affordable Rental Project ($150,000) and the county’s American Dream Downpayment Initiative Program ($4,346). An additional $85,000 would cover administrative costs.

Copies of the draft action plan are available at the county Housing Division offices at 86 W. Kamehameha Ave., Kahului, or at the CDBG office in the David Trask Building at 2145 Kaohu St. in Wailuku.
