KAHULUI — About 25 acres of sugar cane burned Sunday afternoon near Kahului Airport, but it was not part of a planned harvest.

More than a dozen Maui County firefighters as well as airport firefighting personnel responded to the blaze reported at 12:54 p.m. It was under control at 2:10 p.m., according to county spokeswoman Mahina Martin.

Although the fire was near the heliport, it did not endanger any buildings, and no injuries were reported, she said.

Tour helicopter operations were not disrupted, but the road providing vehicle access to the heliport was closed while firefighters battled the blaze.

A crew from Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Co. also helped fight the fire, providing heavy equipment and a water tanker, Martin said.

The Fire Department’s Air One helicopter was on standby during the incident but was not used.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.

You missed the point. This island is one mass graveyard. How can it not be. People have lived here for centuries. Very disturbing, but true.

well you only burn fields to harvest not to expose skeletons..The fields around the airport has been used for years to grow pakalolo so if someone was raiding somebodies elses crop and got killed you don't burn the whole field. swell
