Spartans earn No. 2 seed in D-II volleyball

HONOLULU — The Seabury Hall boys volleyball team received the No. 2 seed for this week’s New City Nissan Division II State Championships, which begin Wednesday.

The Spartans (10-0), champions of the Maui Interscholastic League, will play the winner of Wednesday’s first-round matchup of Kaimuki and Hawaii Prep in the quarterfinals on Thursday at Farrington. The match is set to start at 7:30 p.m.

MIL runner-up Hana plays Pahoa in the first round Wednesday at 6 at Radford. The Dragons (8-2) finished second in the state last season, losing to Maryknoll, now in Division I, in the championship match.

Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Hawaii Baptist is the top seed, while Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Hilo is third and Oahu Interscholastic Association champion Campbell is fourth.

While the D-II tournament is on Oahu, the D-I tournament will be played at King Kekaulike and Kamehameha Maui.

The Warriors (7-3) received the fourth seed and will play all its matches at King Kekaulike. The MIL champions will face either Roosevelt or Waiakea on Thursday at 7.

MIL runner-up Lahainaluna (5-5), also in the King Kekaulike bracket, will face Kalaheo in the first round Wednesday at 7.

Three-time defending champion Punahou received the top seed, followed by BIIF champion Kamehameha Hawaii and OIA champion Waianae.

Also being televised will be Wednesday’s first-round game between MIL runner-up Lahainaluna (15-3) and Maryknoll, also set for 5.

Oahu Interscholastic Association champion Mililani, who won the state tournament in 2005, received the top seed, followed by Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Kamehameha Oahu, Baldwin and Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion Waiakea.

MIL champion Lanai received the No. 4 seed for the Division II tournament, which will be played at Central Oahu Regional Park for the first two rounds. The semifinals, third-place game and championship will be played at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The Pine Lasses (9-7) will play the winner of the game between Kaiser and Konawaena on Thursday at 7.

MIL runner-up Molokai (4-12) will play Kapaa in the play-in game on Tuesday at 3 at Radford. The winner of the game will then play Nanakuli in the first round Wednesday at 5.

Kauai received the top seed in Division II, followed by OIA champion Farrington and BIIF champion Kohala.

The ILH has won all four past D-II titles. The lone representative from the league in this year’s tournament is unseeded Pac-Five.
