Harbor Lights gunman faces federal firearms prosecution

A man arrested after a standoff at a Kahului condominium complex this year is facing federal prosecution through a program targeting illegal guns and ammunition.
Kadon Zimmerman, 30, was indicted on a federal charge of being a felon in possession of firearms in connection with his arrest Feb. 25 at the Harbor Lights complex. He is scheduled to be arraigned May 23 in U.S. District Court in Honolulu.
State charges against Zimmerman were dismissed last week after he was indicted March 25 in federal court. He was referred for federal prosecution under Project Safe Neighborhoods, a nationwide initiative aimed at removing from communities criminals who commit certain firearms offenses.
In the federal court system, convicts face a greater likelihood of incarceration and longer prison terms, serving their sentences at Mainland prisons.
According to an affidavit supporting a federal criminal complaint filed last month, Maui police officers went to the Harbor Lights complex on Kahului Beach Road at about 4:45 p.m. after police received a 911 call from a woman who reported that Zimmerman was in a unit in Building D, “high on ice” and in possession of firearms. Police had a no-bail parole-violation warrant for Zimmerman’s arrest.
As officers were talking to the 911 caller at the complex, Zimmerman appeared at a Building D exit door, looked at the officers, then ran back into the building and into a unit where he had been staying. Officers followed but were blocked at the door by a woman in the unit.
After removing the woman, officers entered and found Zimmerman hiding in a bedroom. Refusing to comply with officers’ orders, Zimmerman held a pistol that he pressed against the right side of his head.
Police evacuated about 100 residents from the building and closed nearby streets to traffic while police negotiators talked with Zimmerman.
One gunshot from the pistol was discharged at 5:23 p.m., according to the complaint, and a police officer saw Zimmerman with a shotgun in the unit as well.
After about eight hours of negotiations, Zimmerman gave up the the shotgun by sliding it into the hallway. Two hours later, he did the same with the pistol before he surrendered shortly after midnight.
Special Agent Ty Torco of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives later examined the firearms — a 12-gauge shotgun and a .22-caliber pistol.
As a felon with convictions for second-degree assault and felony abuse, Zimmerman was prohibited from possessing guns.
If convicted of the federal charge, he could face up to 10 years in prison.

Kadon is NOT A BAD PERSON, what he is is someone who has addiction. If you havent ever battled the disease of addiction I really dont think you have the right to judge someones bad choices. Sure it may have affected alot of people and yes some of you may have minds that are so closed and set in their own ways that you would never stop and maybe try to even comprehend what may have been going on in his life. KADON IS NOT A BAD PERSON, HE MAY HAVE MADE BAD CHOICES WHILE USING DRUGS BUT HE IS NOT A BAD PERSON. I dont see any of you "bashing" on people like the nurses or doctors who are addicted to pain meds and yet go to work every day and perform life threatening procedures. Try fighting with the addiction of ice and than pass judgement.

True believer Christians and tweakers have much in common. Both have major malfunctions in their brains. The Reverand Pua has dedicated her life to encouraging criminal behavior and spends her time enjoying their company. Sister Teresa of India she is not. Imagine yourself immersed in this low life prison slime. You go nuts too.

I encourage all the ice tweaker haters to watch a program called breaking bad...Its on A&E and explores the real propensity of crystal meth and its drug dealing slinging serving glorification..Its not really about the abuse of crystal meth but the abuse of how supply and demand the price to pay for becoming involved...To the tweaker haters i do not blame you for feeling the way you do..I don't like any and all drugs but i am a former abuser...I have lost a lot from it..But i finally realized that i had to quit and how much damage it has done to my family and friends and my life...At least i am still alive and hopefully I can be forgiven.

Hooray! Finally a criminal that will actually get more than 60 days of weekend jail time, which seems to be the absolute max for the 2nd Circuit state court.

I doubt that he will serve the full ten years possible five..Federal prisons are better organized and better equipped..I had my own t.v. and own phone that i could call only certain select people on it any time of the day...This was before my conviction was turned over on appeal....Federal courts are more strict on following the laws than local courts and they are not as corrupt or working favorally with the local law enforcement...In my opinion looking at caselaw in the federal courts it looks like this guy because he eventually surrendered would most likekly recieve a sentence with the possibility of release in about five years..

Bye bye, Zimmie! This isn't The Mr. Rogers Maui Court System you're dealing with now, it's the Feds. Being that you can't play the "I'm turning my life around" card in Federal court, maybe 10 years in the Federal crowbar hotel will convince you to "turn your life around" for real. 'Nuff said...
