The funds came from the association’s annual Excellence in Education golf tournament held last fall.
Four culinary arts students received $500 each, and two in the business and hospitality program received $1,000 apiece. The students were recognized as outstanding achievers by their department coordinators.
The business and hospitality students are:
• Mark Santiago, a Lahainaluna High School graduate who already has a degree in culinary arts from the Art Institute of Seattle. His goal is to be a convention services manager.
• Kathleen Bowen, who is pursuing an associate in applied science degree in hospitality and tourism, and intends to earn a bachelor’s degree. She is in the management trainee program at the Grand Wailea Resort Hotel & Spa.
The culinary arts recipients are:
• Nicole Fetterman, a King Kekaulike High School graduate, whose goal is to be a certified chef.
• Natacia Pharmer, whose goals are to work in a five-star pastry shop at a hotel, do banquets and special events, and own a restaurant or be featured in a TV show.
• Yvonne LaVoie, a Kauai native who attended King Kekaulike. She wants to go abroad, gain experience as a chef, and own a catering business.
• Chloe Thurston, who plans to earn an associate in applied science degree in culinary arts and then a bachelor of arts in interdisciplinary studies. She works as a project manager in MCC’s Research and Development Department.
“It’s an honor to be able to provide for our future,” said Carol Reimann, MHLA executive director. “These students excel in their respective areas and have been awarded for their achievements. We look forward to watching these stellar students turn into the next generation of business leaders.”
The scholarship recipients were honored at Maui No Ka Oi magazine’s Aipono Awards ceremony, which was attended by hundreds of business and restaurant industry principals.
The 2008 Excellence in Education golf tournament will be held Aug. 29 at The Dunes at Maui Lani. In addition to the MCC scholarships, proceeds support high school students who participate in Maui’s Academy of Hospitality and Tourism.
The nonprofit MHLA was founded in 1987 to advocate for the visitor industry. In addition to educational endeavors, the association gives back to the community via the annual Visitor Industry Charity Walk, Excellence in Education golf tournament and Kupuna Dinner.
