LAHAINA — Police arrested a man who allegedly used counterfeit travelers’ checks to buy merchandise at an art gallery.
Following his arrest Sunday afternoon, 49-year-old Michael Lasala of Lahaina was charged with second-degree forgery and second-degree theft. His bail was set at $2,000.
Police had been looking for Lasala after it was reported that he used counterfeit American Express travelers’ checks to buy $1,100 in merchandise from an art gallery on May 7, said Lt. Chad Viela of the Lahaina Criminal Investigation Division.
After presenting three $500 travelers’ checks, Lasala received cash back, Viela said.
Lahaina patrol officers located Lasala at 3:24 p.m. Sunday at Old Lahaina Center, Viela said.
