Leis Family Class Act gets and gives awards

May 22, 2008
The Maui News
The Leis Family Class Act Restaurant upstairs in the Maui Culinary Academy won the Aipono Award for “Best Business Lunch” recently, quite a feat for a student-operated eatery.

Both Instructors Tom Lelli and Juli Umetsu are extremely proud of the award. The Class Act is fine-dining restaurant featuring a four-course pre-fixe lunch with choice of entrees. Chef Tom changes the menu weekly, challenging students and keeping the restaurant interesting.

“We will be reopening for the Fall 2008 semester on Wednesdays and Fridays for lunch the last week of August,” he says. “At our Fabulous Final Lunch, held on May 7, we recognized two students for outstanding accomplishments.”

The Student Choice Award went to Judy Toba. The Most Improved Student Award went to Ethan Borges. The Paia boy, one of seven siblings, graduated from King Kekaulike High School in 2006. During his senior year he knew he wanted to be a cook. He has come a long way in the two semesters that he has spent at Maui Community College.
