Students with Maui ties graduate

The following students with ties to Maui County have earned degrees at colleges and universities:

LARAMIE, Wyo. — RaeAnn Puamohala Purdy graduated with honors May 10 from the

University of Wyoming, earning a bachelor of arts in secondary education with a concurrent major in mathematics.

Purdy is the daughter of Steven Funes of Kahului and Charlene Thompson McCameron of Cheyenne, Wyo.

The graduate is married to Staff Sgt. Ricky A. Purdy Jr., who is stationed at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne and currently deployed to Kirkuk, Iraq.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Earning bachelor’s degrees last month from the University of Portland were the following Maui residents, with their respective majors:

• Kahului — Kacey Higa, elementary education.

• Kula — Nicholas Pisciotto and Eric Takamine, both civil engineering.

• Lahaina — Tyler Fujiwara, civil engineering; Tyler Luckey, finance; and Sally Van, biology.

University President the Rev. E. William Beauchamp conferred 607 bachelor’s and 162 master’s degrees during the commencement exercises May 4 in the Earle A. and Virginia H. Chiles Center on the University of Portland campus.

The University of Portland is Oregon’s Catholic university and has been affiliated closely for nearly a century with the Congregation of Holy Cross, Notre Dame, Ind.

It offers a college of arts and sciences, a graduate school and nationally accredited schools of business, education, engineering and nursing.

NEW YORK — Jodelyn Castillo of Waiehu received an associate of occupational studies degree from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts during a ceremony held April 24 at Broadway’s Majestic Theatre.

Now in its 125th year, the academy is the oldest drama conservatory in the English-speaking world. It has been a training ground for people such as Lauren Bacall, Anne Bancroft, Grace Kelly, Robert Redford, Jason Robards and Spencer Tracy, school officials said.
