WEST SIDE STORIES . . . Popular Food Network TV Host Rachael Ray was just on Maui, taping for her series, “Rachel Ray’s (Maui) Vacation.”

The host went to The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua’s oceanfront Beach House for filming as well as Lahaina Grill. We also hear Honolua Store will get a segment on its plate lunches and hobo breakfasts.

The Lahaina Gateway shopping center sure is jumping as far as the food scene goes. Not only did The Melting Pot and Outback open recently, but now Genki Sushi is targeted to go round in circles with its conveyor belts this week and Maui’s newest gourmet market opened Wednesday. Lahaina Farms is 14,000 square feet with a deli, meat department, R.Field Wine Company outlet, olive bar, gelato bar, bakery, seafood and much more.

Here’s a reminder Merriman’s Kapalua will celebrate its grand opening Wednesday as a benefit for the Maui Arts & Cultural Center.



BITS AND PIECES . . . A Central Maui favorite since 1939, Tokyo Tei in Wailuku will expand its hours on Mondays to also serve dinner. “Before we were only open for lunch on Monday,” says manager Eunice Kitagawa. “We kick it off this Monday.”

On the West Coast, you see a lot of multibranding, but not so much here. Sure, you can get Pizza Hut pies at Taco Bell, and not much else. Wednesday, come to the grand opening of the Green Burrito inside Carl’s Jr. in Maalaea and see the unique partnership.

When you order a $6 burger, you may use the salsa bar and put cilantro and jalapenos on it. Or order straight from the Mexican menu and order nachos, enchilada plates and combinations.

Down to Earth health food stores statewide just launched the new Customer Rewards program, a free card for all of their repeat shoppers.

Cardholders get a “green” shopping bag, advance notice of specials and other discounts. Over 5,000 people already have signed up at the five, all-vegetarian natural foods stores on Maui and Oahu. “We greatly appreciate our customers and want to recognize and reward them for shopping in our stores,” says CEO Mark Fergusson.

Joe’s in Wailea just kicked off its summer early-to-dine program. Buy one entree and get the second one free, when ordering from 5:30 to 6:30 nightly. Menu highlights are pumpkin-seed-crusted fresh catch with chipotle butter, tequila-marinated chicken breast and pistachio-dijon rack of lamb in port wine sauce.

People are excited about A Wild Affair coming Tuesday to Roy’s Kihei. Pegged the “event of the summer,” A Wild Affair will showcase the art of Randy J. Braun, who has brightened the walls with his new works.

“Randy J. Braun has redone the walls with new art, and he is letting me have a drawing of all of the guests that night, and whatever name I draw, will get to choose any piece off the walls that they want to take home! Isn’t that awesome?” gushes Manager Karina Carvajal.

Regular readers and repeat visitors Madeline and Michael Kennedy of Costa Mesa, Calif, subscribe to The Maui News and e-mailed me that: “We always turn to the Scene and read your stuff first,” says Madeline, on Maui now. “As soon as we read about the official grand opening of Mala Wailea and the Roy’s dinner we called and signed up.”

Longhi’s Wailea will host master sommelier and Spanish wine specialist Sara Floyd for a wine dinner at 7 p.m. June 26. The five-course Spanish feast by Chef Cody Christopher will feature organic chicken breast stuffed with spinach, pine nuts and smoked gouda, with celeriac puree, braised cabbage and white-bean-and-bacon ragout. Sara will serve six wines including a 1927 Solera sherry, to be paired with Pastry Chef Michelle Fabiani’s chocolate artisan dessert. Cost is $57. Seating is limited.
