HONOLULU (AP) - The state Transportation Department is changing its requirements for the H-1 Zipperlane in an effort to encourage Oahu motorists to car pool.

Starting Tuesday, the minimum requirement to drive in the Zipperlane will be raised to three persons per vehicle, instead of two.

Transportation Director Brennon Morioka says as more people choose to car pool, it's important to provide them with incentives.

Morioka says carpooling is one of the fastest and least expensive ways to reduce traffic congestion.

The minimum requirement was three when it was introduced in 1998; it was reduced to two in the summer of 2005.
