Students from Maui graduate

The following students with ties to Maui County have earned degrees at colleges and universities:

LOS ANGELES - Kate Robertson received her teaching credential in elementary education from Antioch University on June 13.

She is the daughter of Peggy and Harry Robertson of Lahaina and is a 2003 graduate of Lahainaluna High School. She received a bachelor of arts in psychology from in 2007.

Full scholarship at Princeton

She will teach at the Westwood Charter School in the Los Angeles School District in the fall.

PRINCETON, N.J. - Mallory James of Haiku graduated from Princeton University on June 3 with a degree in cultural anthropology.

She attended Princeton on a full scholarship, including study at Universidad de Santiago in Chile for five months during her senior year.

James graduated from Seabury Hall in 2004. She is the daughter of Gillian Mallory Bruce and John Gordon Bruce of Haiku, and of T.C. James, also of Haiku.

James was among 1,200 students to receive degrees at Princeton last month.

NEW YORK - Lauren B. Winckler of Kihei graduated from Marymount Manhattan College with a bachelor of arts in drama with a minor in musical theater.

During her senior year, she earned a place on the dean's list with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.

She will be working and performing under the stage name Lauren Hennessy. Hennessy is the maiden name of her paternal grandmother, Doris Hennessy.

She is the daughter of Ron and Debi Winckler of Kihei and a 2002 graduate of Baldwin High School.

The school's commencement was held May 16 at the Lincoln Center.

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Alyse Takayesu, daughter of Eileen and Ed Takayesu of Kula, received a bachelor of arts in anthropology from Williams College at the school's 219th commencement exercises June 1.

She graduated cum laude.

En route to graduation, Takayesu wrote an honors thesis in anthropology, was named a Class of 1960 Scholar in environmental studies and earned the James Orton Award in Anthropology.

The commencement address was delivered by artist and sculptor Richard Serra.

Williams College was founded in 1793 as an undergraduate, residential, privately endowed liberal arts college. The Comparative Guide to American Colleges called Williams "one of the most prestigious liberal arts colleges in the country," and the Barron's Top 50: An Inside Look at America's Best

Colleges said, "Williams' biggest strength is the students it attracts." Current enrollment is about 2,000.

SAN FRANCISCO - Ray Velasco of Lahaina has graduated cum laude from the University of San Francisco, receiving a bachelor of arts in international studies.

The school held its commencement May 16.

Velasco also received the Leo T. McCarthy Public Service Certificate, which is earned by those who participate in the university's interdisciplinary program for students who want to acquire background and skills for public service.

He also minored in sociology and European studies.

Velasco is the son of Simplicio and Concepcion Velasco of Lahaina and a 2004 graduate of Lahainaluna High School.
