Volunteers to be honored

POSTED: August 2, 2008

Nearly all of Maui's social agencies and recreational groups run on the backs of volunteers, selfless individuals who donate time and money to the cause. Without them, Maui would be a poorer place.

Helping without being asked is an island tradition, probably due to being on an island where everyone is, in effect, in the same boat. Most of the time, volunteers go about the work with little or no recognition by the general public. The governor is offering an opportunity to honor your favorite volunteer, and to stimulate others to volunteer.

Oct. 17, Gov. Linda Lingle and the Hawai'i Commission for National and Community Service will celebrate the state's outstanding volunteers during 2007. According to an advertisement in the July 30 issue of The Maui News, this will be the first time for Governor's Volunteer Recognition Awards.

The awards will go to "individuals and organizations for their dedication, commitment and determination in promoting and supporting volunteerism throughout Hawaii. It is the highest honor bestowed by the commission and its purpose is to inspire individuals to make a positive impact on the lives of others who are in need and in places where it can make a difference."

Who is your favorite volunteer or community-helping organization? Nominations will be accepted until Aug. 8. For the official nomination forms or more information on nomination guidelines, visit the commission's Web site at www.hawaii.edu/americorpshawaii.

There are six categories: youth in grades K through 12, young adult ages 19 to 25, adults 25 to 59, seniors who are 60 or older, organizations not limited to nonprofits, and businesses that provide voluntary or free services to the community.

You can make a difference by nominating a volunteer in one or more of the categories. Honor the individual or group or business that makes you proud to be part of Maui, a community that cares.
