New tower helps lifeguards

August 16, 2008
The Maui News

Ocean Safety Officer Alfredo Villas-Boas keeps an eye on swimmers and surfers Tuesday from the new tower on the east end of Hookipa Beach Park.

The new tower opened Aug. 8 and was added because of the dangerous currents generated when high surf hits the north shore.

At the same time, the shallows on the east end of the beach are a popular place for beginning and keiki surfers to learn the sport.

The tower is the second one at Hookipa Beach Park, and is staffed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily.

"I feel honored to be here and help our local community," Villas-Boas said.
