Peering into history

August 20, 2008
The Maui News

Thanks to new lighting installed as part of a six-month project to replace Bailey House Museum's electrical system, museum Executive Director Roslyn Lightfoot has good light to give Washington state visitor Lynn McKenzie a bit of history on one of her favorite displays at the Wailuku facility Tuesday. The display features the hat that Samuel Kalama wore to King David Kalakaua's funeral in 1891 and a dress worn by Louisa Victoria Crowder Copp, wife of Judge Charles Copp, to Kalakaua's coronation celebration in 1883.

A special addition to the display Tuesday was the boar's-tooth broach that Louisa Copp wore to the coronation.

The Bailey House Museum maintains, preserves and displays a wide variety of artifacts. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
